To Baghdad And Back, 2005
To Baghdad and Back is a solo exhibit featured at Blink Gallery in Newport, Rhode Island, April 7-May 1, 2005 and at Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, Maine, June 3-30, 2005. The work in the exhibit was based on Buotte's first tour in Baghdad, Iraq, from March 2003 to April 2004.
After a year-long humanitarian effort, To Baghdad and Back is a reflection of that time. The exhibit includes flat works on vellum and paper, and three-dimensional works on wood and nylon. The source images include unclassified military maps, charts, artifacts, and photographs. The audience does not see the works fully because they are covered with black veils, reminiscent of the black burkha that traditional Muslim women wear.
While working at the Iraqi Ministry of Education, Buotte helped to repair the first 1,500 or 10% of the Iraqi primary and secondary schools nationwide. Exhibit attendees were encouraged to bring school supplies such as pencils, ink pens, and notebooks for Iraqi children to the gallery. At the end of second exhibit, 100 pounds of supplies went to Iraq.
