Drawing Blood, 2006, 2007

Drawing Blood is a public event that provides blood for patients who need it, energizes groups that may not normally work together, and allows artists to practice their craft in a non-studio environment.

For this collaborative effort, the American Red Cross, artists, student governments, radio stations and businesses are teamed together. Official blood drives have occured simultaneously at the Maine College of Art and University of Maine, Augusta campuses. While blood donors give blood, volunteer artists draw their portraits. The completed portraits are exhibited to inspire others to join in this lifesaving effort.

The event is dedicated to Buotte's mother, Paula, who received blood products during her treatment for cancer. She passed in October 2004. Drawing Blood highlights the ongoing need for blood products for cancer patients and other needy recipients.
