Baghdad Confusion, colored pencil, marker, ink on vellum, 2005
Most of my works whether sculptural or performative are supported by drawings. A multiplicity of experiences inform my two-dimensional work. The formal aspects of my work seek to combine a personal language of layered symbols, diagrams, metaphors, science, and active figures, to create elaborate semi-abstractions. I strive to engage color and line with the personal and collective narrative of human predicament and emotion, while exploring complex layers of action, space, and time. Under layers of personal markings, is a structure drawn from contradictory origins and questioned contexts. The non-linear arrangement of images and information combine transparency and opacity, realism and abstraction. The effect is a compositional maelstrom, as elements advance and recede within complex, ambiguous spaces. The work mirrors our fast-paced life and provides the viewer with an array of choices and opportunities.
